Privacy notice.

What stays on your device, what leaves it, and who handles data for us.

On your device

Your saved places, followed cities, saved guides, followed authors and maps are kept in your browser’s local storage. They are not sent to us, and you do not need an account for them. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them.

When you save a place or follow a city, we add one to that place’s or city’s count of saves. The count is not linked to you.

Cookies and analytics

We ask once whether we may use Google Analytics. Until you press “Accept”, none of it runs on the site and it sets no cookies. “Decline” keeps it that way.

If you accept, Google Analytics uses cookies to tell one visit from another and counts what people do on the site (see “Who handles data for us”). Through Google’s Consent Mode we also tell it that you have not agreed to advertising cookies or to the use of your data for ads: there are no ads on Journey Place, so we never ask for that.

Your answer is kept in this browser’s local storage for 12 months, then we ask again. If this site’s data is cleared, or the private window you used is closed, we ask on your next visit.

To change your answer, press the button below. Google Analytics stops at once, its cookies are removed and, if it was running on this page, the page reloads without it. The question then appears again at the bottom of the page.

Your position

Journey Place uses your position only when you ask it to, by pressing “Show my position” or “Near me”. Your browser asks for your permission first. The position is used in your browser, to sort places by distance and to mark where you are on the map. It is never sent to us.

Who handles data for us

Google
  • Analytics, only if you accept it, counts visits and what people do on the site: page views, saves, shares, searches and use of the map. The events we send hold our own ids and counts, never the text you type. Google also receives the address of each page you open; on the search page, and on a city page when you filter its places by text, that address contains the text you typed.
  • Maps draws the maps: your browser asks Google for the area a map shows. Our server also asks Google for place and weather details, without any information about you.
  • Firebase hosts the site and its database, and signs you in if you make an account.
Algolia
Search. What you type into the search box is sent to Algolia, together with your IP address and browser details, so that it can find places. On the search page the request comes from our server instead, without your IP address.
Cloudinary
Images. Our photographs are stored and resized by Cloudinary. Your browser loads them from there, so Cloudinary sees your IP address and browser details, as any image host does.

Accounts

You do not need an account to use Journey Place. If you make one, Firebase (Google) holds your e-mail address, your name and, if you add one, your photo, so that you can sign in and have a profile.
